Despite the possibility of a trap, Irving resolves himself to meet Akmenos at Arrogance's Peak to rescue Esme, while the rest of the party follows behind him. At the top of Arrogance's Peak, Akmenos speaks to Irving alone, and recites the tale of how the mountain was created. A human woman built up Arrogance's peak to try to reach the gods, with the help thousands of her fellow humans. Although the woman's intentions were innocent enough, a certain god saw her creation of Arrogance's Peak as an insult, and struck her, the tower, and hundreds of her followers down as punishment. But as punishment for meddling in human affairs, this certain god never received any followers and faded into obscurity. Akmenos compares himself and Irving to the god and mortal in this story. However, Irving is utterly disgusted by the means Akmenos uses to achieve his goals, and refuses to respect him in any sense.
After the battle, Akmenos appreciates meeting Irving, and disappears before the party is able to kill him. Elias reveals that something strange has happened with Akmenos' staff, and thus no one should touch it until it is further researched.
