In this chapter the party finally arrives in Verroa, and speaks with the Order of the Eternals. Vesta is the first to speak with Alastair, and Irving is the one responsible for telling Alastair of Sterling's death. Despite the grim circumstances, Irving and Alastair are glad to meet for the first time, and Alastair commends Sterling for his perseverance. The next day, Vesta gives a testimony concerning the missing aspects and Irving's party. While the councilor suspects Irving's party as the aspect thieves, Alastair believes a certain expellee from Cosmere university may be after the aspect. Whatever the case, Alastair astutely decides to send Irving and his party to undergo the Trial of the Soul at the Temple of Koeli-Sumash. If they pasted the trial, their innocent would be proven. If they did not pass the trial, their guilt would be evident and their lives forfeit. Due to the Temple of Koeli-Sumash being lost for over a millennia, the party is recommended by Alastair to find a "compass" at the Temple of Hleric. Ambassador of the Mystic Council Maeve and her bodyguard, Thae'Lanel, decide to accompany the party to the Temple of Hleric.
As the party passes through the Towering Weald, they are suddenly attacked by Sylvans. A mysterious rogue by the name of Wren decides to help the party in battle in order to escape effectively himself. Once the battle is over, Wren decides to continue travelling with the party.
