Garrick
Backstory
Garrick was born and raised in Brookstead. As you may recall from last week's reveal, Brookstead is known for its first-rate military academy, which Garrick attends. The school and town are based on the ancient model of 'soldier farming'. Local youth attend Brookstead Academy in the hopes of taking up positions as Delian officers upon graduation. Graduates who successfully reach the end of their military service are granted an endowment of land in Brookstead to settle and raise the next generation of officers.
Garrick's father, Galen, has been headmaster of the academy for 10 years and its swordmaster for many more. Having been near the position of Delian commander as a young man, people long expected Galen's son to rival his prowess. Garrick chafed at the comparisons, often interested in anything but training. His lack of siblings forced Garrick to find kinship among the other children in Brookstead. He became very close with his neighbor Maren, who is a year older.
Garrick's relationship with Galen slowly deteriorated with his lack of commitment. When the village was attacked by raiders in 1098 IY, he sheltered with another youth, Irving. They watched as Irving's brother, who was in his graduate year, rallied the town and drove off the raiders. This was the first time Garrick had seen why Galen pushed him so hard, and also gave him the perfect training partner in Irving.
They were inseparable from this point on, and Garrick began to tap into his considerable natural talent. Many questioned why the two remained so close given their clear differences. Irving was unflappable, and Garrick was excitable. Irving was relentless in his pursuit of excellence, and Garrick was relentless in his pursuit of budding romance. Privately, Garrick knew that Irving needed someone to slow him down, just the same as Garrick needed someone to speed him up. Their friendship led to their dominance when they enrolled in the academy.
Years later they still have yet to drop below a single other student from their year in the rankings. They formed a strong bond with Maren, spending more time with her and her younger brother, Alden. Now in Maren's graduate year, the four are facing more uncertainty than they have in years.
